Scalable Cloud for BD FlowJo

FlowJo is a leader in flow cytometry analysis software, supporting researchers and institutions globally. Their platform and website require continuous uptime, fast content delivery, and the flexibility to evolve with user demand. We engineered a reliable server environment hosted on AWS and powered by a CMS that balances performance, speed, and customization.

The Challenge

Global Access Demands High Uptime: FlowJo needed their site to be consistently available across multiple time zones to serve a global user base of researchers and customers.

Heavy Media and Documentation Load: The platform had to efficiently manage large volumes of downloadable content, including scientific documentation and media files.

Scalability for Product Growth: With new product launches on the horizon, the infrastructure had to support increasing traffic and new CMS requirements without reengineering the platform.

Limited Internal Dev Resources for Ongoing Support: The internal team couldn’t take on the burden of ongoing infrastructure management, security updates, and performance tuning.

Our Solution

High-Availability AWS Architecture: Deployed scalable Amazon EC2 and RDS instances to ensure uptime, fast performance, and dynamic content delivery around the world.

Externalized File System with Amazon EFS: Set up shared storage across multiple servers to handle large files consistently and support seamless load balancing.

Laravel-Based CMS Implementation with October CMS: Built on a secure, performance-optimized Laravel framework, the CMS gave FlowJo’s team control without sacrificing speed or flexibility.

Full Infrastructure Management and Support Services: Basebuild provided continuous AWS monitoring, security patching, CI/CD deployment support, and disaster recovery planning.

Tech Stack:

The FlowJo scalable AWS infrastructure stack uses EC2 (for compute), RDS (database), EFS (shared file storage), and October CMS on a Laravel foundation, with ongoing support for monitoring, backups, and CI/CD orchestration. For more information please contact Dave.

Results

Near-Zero Downtime for Global Users: Researchers worldwide can access the platform reliably at any time, ensuring uninterrupted workflows and data access.

Streamlined Content Publishing and Management: Internal teams now manage dynamic site content with ease, using October CMS without needing developer involvement.

Scalable Foundation for Future Launches: The architecture is built to grow, easily accommodating upcoming product rollouts and traffic spikes.

Reduced Operational Overhead: With Basebuild managing the backend, FlowJo’s internal team can stay focused on product innovation instead of infrastructure upkeep.
